Reviewing November 2023 Weather in Toms River, NJ

November 2023 was colder than normal in the Bellcrest section of Toms River, NJ. However, while the month was colder than normal, temperatures during November resembled a wild roller coaster ride. Starting much cooler than normal for the first three days, temperatures jumped back above normal through the 1st third of the month. Another drop below normal occurred during the middle of the month, replaced with a record high on the 17th of 68 F. Much of the rest of the month was colder than normal, particularly after Thanksgiving, when low temperatures cracked the freezing mark several times.

Rainfall was much lower than normal during November 2023, continuing a trend that began in October. How dry was the month? Rainfall was more than 1.50 inches below normal, meaning that Toms River received less than half of the expected rainfall for a typical November. In fact, November 2023 was the 5^th driest November on record for this location (rainfall records date back to 1989).

Our Tempest Weather Station has a lightning detector, but no lightning activity was observed during the month. Thunderstorms are rare in November, but not unheard of. For example, a strong cold front crossed NJ, bringing high winds and frequent lightning, during the evening hours of November 15th, 1989. Behind the front, much colder air plunged into NJ, setting the stage for a snowstorm on Thanksgiving Day that year. That was the earliest I had ever witnessed plowable snowfall during the month of November.
